A NOTE FROM JANE

ELM concluded our 2023-2024 season with a performance of our most ambitious repertoire and level of artistry to date. This continued musical growth is a direct result of the dedication, attention to detail, and high expectations of our students held by our ELM teaching artists.

Perhaps the most moving moments of our spring concert were when our elmYO orchestra played the ‘Graduation March’ as our four seniors walked onto the stage to receive their ELM diplomas and scholarship. These remarkable individuals have been in ELM for 10 years each having joined as second graders. They, quite literally, ‘grew up’ in ELM.

We are now in full summer swing. This week, we welcomed our brand new class of 18 woodwind and brass students who are spending the week learning about the flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone and will eventually settle upon their instrument. Their joy of discovery is contagious.

In addition to attending ELM summer camp, many of our students will be exploring all sorts of music and non-music camps. You can read in our Spotlight about one parent’s experience letting her daughter attend Deer Hill last year. What began as a tearful goodbye evolved into a transformative adventure.

As always, thank you for supporting our students, our programs, and our mission.

Warmly,
Jane

STUDENT CONNECTIONS

Spring concert magic

The audience was blown away by the beauty of Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite performed by our advanced string ensemble. Their technical and musical skills shine brightly.

ELM celebrates our graduates

These four amazing young adults have all been part of ELM since 2nd grade, an incredible accomplishment. Here they are - proudly celebrated by their peers performing the graduation march. Enough to bring tears to your eyes.

SUMMER AT ELM

ELM students arriving at Deer Hill Expeditions for their 3-week adventure.

Music, hiking, sailing, and more. All tuition-free.

This summer our students are spread near and far, participating in both intensive music activities as well as other exciting adventures. These adventures include our chamber music camp with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra which culminates in a concert for friends and family on July 25th at 5:30pm for our chamber concert here in our cul-de-sac.

ELM SPOTLIGHTS

Overcoming Fear and Letting Go

For this edition of ELM Spotlights, Gladys Romero and her daughter Emily, an ELM trombone player, sat down with our host, Kate Fitzsimmons, to talk about how overcoming fear allowed her daughter to attend a three-week wilderness trip that surprisingly made her feel more connected to her culture.
